Spooky season is upon us, and we can’t get enough of pumpkin patches, cozy candles, and all those warming spices leading up to Halloween. The morning after those Halloween parties, however, can bring a frightening realization: The telltale signs of Halloween costume makeup on our clothes and upholstery. Before you panic, read on. We’ve got helpful hints on removing Halloween makeup from fabric–and they start with L’AVANT Collective.

What is “Halloween makeup”?

Halloween makeup comprises both everyday makeup from your makeup bag, and the thick, oil-based paint that you often find in party or costume stores. In general, Halloween makeup is applied with a much heavier hand than the makeup looks you’d wear on a daily basis, and that can lead to it transferring to both clothing and upholstery in your home–definitely not where you want it to end up!

Removing Halloween makeup from upholstery

Hosting ghosts and goblins of any age is what makes Halloween so fun! But all Halloween makeup can smudge and shift onto your upholstered furniture–and it can be quite a challenge to remove it.

Before you go buying a slipcover to hide your stained couch, however, consider reaching for a powerful plant-based laundry detergent made with plant enzymes known for breaking down grease and oils that are at the heart of Halloween makeup.

L’AVANT Collective High Performing Laundry Detergent is an eco-luxe laundry detergent formulated with the most powerful blend of plant-based enzymes to help break down grease and lift stains, even out of upholstery. One of these enzymes is cellulose, which is renowned for helping to remove stains while protecting the integrity of fabric–good news for upholstered furniture.

High Performing Laundry Detergent

To begin, blot a damp cloth (we like reusable microfiber cloths for their versatility) with a dime-sized amount of L’AVANT natural laundry detergent to start. We always recommend reading any instructions about how to clean your upholstery before attempting stain removal, and patch testing the laundry detergent on an out-of-sight area on your furniture. If the patch testing goes well, apply the laundry detergent to the stain in a gentle blotting motion, pressing and lifting the cloth against the Halloween makeup stain to work the detergent into the upholstery. Let the plant-based enzymes go to work to break down the grease of the stain, and allow it to sit for an hour or two. Re-wet the cloth, squeezing out any excess moisture. Gently begin blotting the affected area again, rotating the cloth as necessary as the stain begins to transfer from the upholstery to the cloth. Repeat until the stain has lifted and you are satisfied with the result. Finally, use a clean, damp reusable cloth or paper towel to blot away any excess natural laundry detergent, pressing firmly to lift away residual moisture on your upholstery.

Getting Halloween makeup out of clothing

Getting makeup on clothing isn’t reserved solely for Halloween, but the chances of it happening rise significantly when your face is painted green! As with upholstery, it’s important to read the care instructions on clothing before proceeding with pre-treating and washing it. If your garment is machine washable, go ahead and reach for your bottle of L’AVANT Collective High Performing Dish Soap. Like all L’AVANT products, this non toxic dish soap is formulated with plant-based ingredients–and in particular, this formula contains a powerful blend to break down grease and oil, making it ideal for use on Halloween makeup.

Dish Soap x Multipurpose Cleaner

Begin by pre-treating your clothing with a dollop of this eco luxe dish soap. Work the soap into the stain with your fingers, then spritz it with L’AVANT Multipurpose Surface Cleaner to allow the pre-treating power to really take hold. Let it sit for a minimum of several hours, then launder as usual with your choice of L’AVANT Collective laundry detergent. This pre-treatment and laundering method is a customer favorite for its ability to remove even the most stubborn stains, from oils to berries and more–and we highly recommend it for removing Halloween makeup from clothing, as well!

With your beautiful bottles of L’AVANT Collective close at hand this fall, you can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Halloween makeup won’t last longer than Halloween, even if it ends up on your clothing or your couch.
